The District Wine Storage facility, set to open by 2025, is the brainchild of two local entrepreneurs who have combined their passion for wine with their experience in the industry. This innovative wine storage facility aims to cater to both wine enthusiasts and commercial clients, providing a unique space for storing and managing wine collections.

Benefits for Wine Enthusiasts

  • Convenient storage for wine collections
  • Climate-controlled environment to preserve wine quality
  • Access to local deliveries, inventory management, and appraisals

The facility, located at 1919 Pennsylvania Avenue in Foggy Bottom, is situated in an eight-story, 285,000-square-foot office building. Originally constructed in 1979, the building was renovated in 2022. The lower-level space, which will be converted into a subterranean wine storage facility, is approximately 8,000 square feet. District Wine Storage owners Justin Bonner and Kevin Shin have over 30 years of experience in the DMV wine scene, having worked in import distribution, retail, and auction markets. Their extensive knowledge of the industry and local wine culture sets them apart from other storage providers.

“Kevin and I have been active members of the DMV wine scene for over 30 years, whereas other local storage providers are not engaged in the local scene. (We) have extensive experience in all aspects of the wine trade, from import distribution, and retail to the auction markets.”

— Justin Bonner, Co-Founder of District Wine Storage

The facility will offer wine storage for up to 350,000 bottles, with membership options starting at one year. Clients will have access to climate-controlled wine lockers Monday through Friday during business hours and on Saturdays by appointment. The facility will not have a tasting room, but the owners plan to add one during expansion.

The owners have not yet filled in all the details, but they intend to provide more cost-conscious cellaring options and add white glove services next year. They are actively looking for a second location for the concept in D.C. and plan to open the facility by 2025.

DMV Wine Scene

DMV stands for the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The DMV wine scene refers to the local wine industry, including wineries, wine shops, and wine enthusiasts.

The concept of business and residential wine storage for connoisseurs and restaurants is not new. However, District Wine Storage aims to set itself apart from other storage providers due to its experience and local knowledge. By offering a unique space for storing and managing wine collections, the facility aims to cater to the needs of wine enthusiasts and commercial clients in the D.C. area.
