The world of tequila is full of excitement, and one category that is gaining attention is the rosa tequila. With its pinkish hue, rosa tequilas are a unique blend of tradition and innovation, as explained by Richard Betts, creator of Tequila Komos.

  • Blanco (white) or joven (gold) tequilas lightly aged in red wine barrels
  • Meaningful blend of tradition and innovation
  • Unique blend of agave character and red fruit notes from wine barrels

Unlike traditional blanco tequilas, rosa tequilas do not have a formal definition. However, they are widely regarded as a blanco or joven tequila that has been lightly aged in red wine barrels. This innovative approach to ageing tequila has resulted in a distinctive taste that is both delicate and full of character.

Key Characteristics: Blanco or joven tequila
Aging Process: Lightly aged in red wine barrels
Taste Profile: Delicate, yet distinctive, with a balance of agave character and red fruit notes

“Rosa tequilas are becoming an exciting category as they’re a unique blend of tradition and innovation,”

Richard Betts, a former Master Sommelier with a background in winemaking, is one of the pioneers of this category. He cites Scotch whisky cask finishes as inspiration for his Reposado Rosa, which is aged for 65 days with grape skins in ex-red wine French oak barrels from Napa and Sonoma. The result is a tequila that is not only unique but also versatile, working well as both a sipper and in mixed drinks.

“The thought to experiment came from my winemaking background, where I’ve played with various used barrels,”

El Jimador and Herradura tequila ambassador Dani Umoette suggests using rosa tequila alongside sweet vermouth, a touch of red wine and cherry bitters for a tequila twist on a Manhattan; or even lengthened with cream soda in a refreshing highball.

This style of tequila is not only exciting but also versatile. It can be enjoyed on its own as a sipper or used in a variety of cocktails, such as the Spicy Tommy’s Margarita or the tequila twist on a Manhattan.

“It still shows vibrant, primary, roasted-agave flavours, but the influence of the oak adds some vanilla and a smoky element. It has a personality all of its own, which shows off both neat and over ice with sparkling water,”

Richard Betts recommends this tequila in a Spicy Tommy’s Margarita, paired with dark chocolate or something savoury, such as roast duck.
